In 1968, Commodores named the band when William King, trumpeter, guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist, flipped open a dictionary and ran his finger down the page to find the word that bears their name to this day.

In 1970, Andre Callahan, drummer-vocalist-keyboardist, left Commodores and was replaced by James Ingram, not the solo artist, as vocalist-drummer.

In 1972, James Ingram left to serve in Vietnam and was replaced by Walter Orange as drummer-vocalist.

In 1982, Lionel Richie, vocalist-keyboardist-saxophonist, left Commodores to pursue a solo career and was replaced by Skyler Jett as co-lead singer.
